Tree planting underway in Ballyshannon

The group have been awarded a grant to support hedgerow planting and bird boxes installation around the area, helping us continue the work set out in the Community Biodiversity Action Plan compiled in 2024.

Over March, we have planted 1800 trees around the community. We will also be installing an owl box and numerous bird boxes in the area, working with local homes and a local scout group also. Colm and his team worked really well to get the planting done in time, and we have planted a rich mix of Irish hedgerow as well as fruit trees at the school and in some local homes.

Welcoming the support from the Community Foundation and the National Parks and Wildlife Service a spokesperson from Ballyshannon said. “This support will make a big difference to the area, with over 400 metres of new hedgerows and native trees planted, which will help towards fulfilling the Community Biodiversity Action Plan created with the support of Community Foundation and Ecologist Catherine O’Connell in 2024.

We hope that the additional hedgerows will attract more insects and birdlife, enriching the local environment. These new plantings will also introduce a greater diversity of trees and shrubs, building on the natural assets we already have. By installing bird boxes in carefully selected locations, we aim to further increase bird populations in the area’’
